Coconut water kefir is actually fermented coconut water. It is extremely beneficial probiotic beverage which is rich in numerous minerals, vitamins and electrolytes. So it contains Thiamin, Niacin, Riboflavin, folates, pantothenic acid, beta carotene and vitamins A,B6, C, E and K. This beverage is better than regular kefir because it doesn’t contain the problematic substances that common dairy products do- like lactose and casein. This means that your body will digest this probiotic beverage better. That is why it is believed that Coconut water kefir is more beneficial for the digestive tract than any other probiotic food, yogurt for example.

It is quite familiar that dairy products form acid which many people cannot handle. On the other hand coconut water contains minerals and electrolytes that are same as those found in the human body.

How to Make Coconut Water Kefir

You can use one of these three ways to make your own coconut water kefir:

  1. Use existing kefir as a starter
  2. Use a kefir starter culture
  3. Use kefir grains

One of the easiest ways is with the help of kefir grains. This method is also more economical as the grains multiply fast so you won’t have to buy them again.


  • 7 cups fresh coconut water
  • 5 tablespoons water kefir grains
  • 1 Ceylon cinnamon stick (my favorite cinnamon sticks)


Into 1/2 gallon jar, add 7 cups of coconut water.

Then add the kefir grains and the cinnamon stick . Cover the mixture and wait for 48 hours. Do not let it ferment too long as it may explode.

You will notice that it is fermented when the coconut water will become cloudy and lighter in color. If they are done culturing, the kefir grains will rise up to the top of the jar. Then remove the kefir grains and if you want, you can use them for preparing new coconut water kefir or you can place them in water in the fridge.

That is all. Easy but extremely healthy!!!
