Despite the recent study which reported that coffee might help in the prevention of risk of type 2 diabetes, we have here another reason, for you to keep with your morning coffee rituals: New research suggests coffee consumption might help prevent eyesight deterioration that is likely to occur in diabetics.
The chlorogencic acid or CLA is the key ingredient responsible for this protective benefit; and according to the researchers from Cornell, the CLA is a powerful antioxidant. The team studied mice whose eyes were treated with nitric oxide, a substance that would create free radicals and oxidative stress, thereby contributing to retinal degeneration in the eyes. However mice that were pretreated with CLA, showed no signs at all of retinal damage after they have been exposed to the nitric oxide.
The researchers explained that: Diabetics can often, due to tissue damage, suffer loss of eyesight, as the retina is one of the most metabolically active tissues that require a high level of oxygen.

Next the researchers want to see if drinking coffee helps CLA to cross the blood – retinal barrier. If coffee consumption can help deliver CLA directly to the retina, the scientists might be able to come up with a treatment that prevents retinal damage.
” The most popular drink in the world is coffee, and our goal is to understand what benefit we can get from it,” said the professor of food science at Cornell, and the study author, Chang Y. Lee.
The study is published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
